PGD Information
Effective Date: 1st April 2025
At Park View Pharmacy, we offer a range of services under Patient Group Directions (PGDs), allowing our qualified pharmacists to supply and administer certain medicines directly to patients without the need for a prescription.
This page explains what PGDs are, how we use them, and what safeguards are in place to ensure safe and effective care.
1. What is a Patient Group Direction (PGD)?
A Patient Group Direction (PGD) is a legal framework that allows certain registered healthcare professionals, such as pharmacists, to supply and/or administer specified medicines to groups of patients who meet defined criteria, without needing a prescription from a doctor.
PGDs are used for situations where:
- There is no need for individual prescriptions
- Patients benefit from quick access to treatment
- The medicine and condition are clearly defined
- The pharmacist has undergone the necessary training
2. Services Offered Under PGDs
At Park View Pharmacy, we currently offer the following services under PGDs (subject to patient eligibility):
- Emergency Hormonal Contraception (Morning After Pill)
- Travel Vaccinations
- NHS Vaccinations (e.g., Flu, Shingles, HPV – where applicable)
- Period Delay Medication
- Certain Antibiotics (e.g., for uncomplicated UTIs or skin infections, under NHS or private pathways)
- Hay Fever and Allergy Treatments
- Erectile Dysfunction and other Men’s/Women’s Health services (private PGDs)
Please note: Availability may vary depending on pharmacist accreditation and local health authority approval.
3. How PGDs Work at Our Pharmacy
- Patient Assessment
Our pharmacist will ask you a few questions to confirm your eligibility for treatment under the relevant PGD. - Informed Consent
You will be given clear information about the medicine, how it works, and any possible side effects before we proceed. - Medicine Supply/Administration
If appropriate, the pharmacist will supply or administer the treatment directly during your visit.
All services are delivered in a private consultation room to ensure confidentiality and comfort.
4. Who Authorises PGDs?
All PGDs used at Park View Pharmacy are:
- Written and authorised by healthcare professionals (doctors/pharmacists)
- Approved by NHS England, local health authorities, or private PGD providers
- Used only by pharmacists who are trained, accredited, and competent in the clinical area concerned
Each PGD we use is reviewed regularly to ensure it remains up to date with national guidelines and safety standards.
5. Safety & Professional Standards
When using PGDs, our pharmacists adhere to:
- The Human Medicines Regulations 2012
- General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) standards
- NHS and local authority guidance
- Confidentiality, consent, and safeguarding procedures
