What Is the NHS Pharmacy Contraception Service?
The NHS Pharmacy Contraception Service allows trained community pharmacists to supply oral contraception (either initiating or continuing treatment) to eligible patients. This service is part of the NHS Pharmacy First initiative and aims to make contraception more accessible — especially without needing a GP visit.
You can receive:
- A first-time prescription for the contraceptive pill
- A repeat supply if you’re already taking it
- Advice on switching between pill types (if clinically appropriate)
All services are carried out under Patient Group Directions (PGDs) and follow NHS clinical guidelines.
Who Can Access This Service?
You are eligible for the NHS Pharmacy Contraception Service if you:
- Are aged from menarche up to 54 years old
- Require a combined oral contraceptive (COC) or progestogen-only pill (POP)
- Can provide informed consent for treatment
- Do not have any contraindications after pharmacist assessment
You do not need to be registered with a GP to access this service. If you are not suitable for pharmacist-led contraception, we’ll refer you to your GP or a local sexual health service.
Types of Contraceptive Pills Offered

We provide NHS-funded access to:
- Combined Oral Contraceptive Pills (COC) – Contain oestrogen and progestogen
- Progestogen-Only Pills (POP) – Suitable for those who can’t take oestrogen
Our pharmacist will explain the benefits, side effects, and help you decide which type is right for you.
